History of St. Thomas, Ontario

The city, located at the intersection of two historical roads, was first settled in 1810. It was named the seat of the new Elgin County in 1844 and was incorporated as a village in 1852, as a town in 1861, and as a city in 1881. In the late 19th century and early 20th century several railways were constructed through the city, and St. Thomas became an important railway junction. It has earned the title of the "Railway Capital of Canada.” St. Thomas was named after Thomas Talbot who helped promote the development of this region during the early 19th century.

St. Thomas has four distinct seasons, the average summer temperature is 25ºC and average winter temperature is 2º C. Winter temperatures last from December to March and summer temperatures from around June to September.

St. Thomas is just moments from the 401 highway and halfway between Detroit on the west, Toronto and Buffalo to the east. Each is just a little more than a two hour drive away.

City Council is the governing body for St. Thomas with members elected for a three-year term in office. St Thomas is represented by a Mayor and seven Aldermen who represent the city as a whole.

St. Thomas's Economy and Industry

St. Thomas is home to some of the most productive, innovative and well-recognized names in both the private and public sectors of the economy. St. Thomas has a strong presence in the automotive industry. The Ford Motor Company of Canada employs over 2000 people, Sterling Trucks (assembly of heavy trucks) also employs over 2000 people and are the two major employers in St. Thomas.
